Catedral de Sal, Zipaquira
Can you imagine a church built in salt??? In Bogotá , the capital of Columbia, you can find this amazing structure.
The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá (Catedral de Sal, Zipaquira) is a Roman Catholic church built 200 meters underground within the tunnels of a now unused salt mine in a halite mountain near the town of Zipaquirá, in Cundinamarca, Colombia.
The cathedral is broken up into 14 small chapels connected by tunnels and each chapel represent a station in the way of cross. For believers the cathedral stands as a pillar of spiritual strength.
The cathedral was opened to the public in 1995. With out the help of a tour guide you can traverse the whole structure in around 40 minutes.
The rush of visitors will be at its peak during the Holy week, ie, the week leading up to Easter.
