The first Pope to visit India was Pope Paul VI, who paid a 4 day visit to Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1964 to participate in the 38th International Eucharistic Congress which happened on November 12 to 15, 1964. The Pope was greeted at the Santacruz International airport mumbai by then Vice President Dr Zakir Hussain, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, Maharashtra Governor Dr PV Cherian, Chief Minister VP Naik, Indira Gandhi and Vijayalakshmi Pandit.


For the first time in the history of *International Eucharistic Congress, it took place in a country that did not have a significant Roman Catholic followers. The objective of the congress was proclaiming the continuing Catholic belief that the "Real Presence" of Christ was in the Holy Eucharist.

Along with Pope Paul VI, a large number of cardinals and around 20,000 foreign visitors attended the congress. Approximately between 2.5 & 3.5 lakhs of people gathered at the Oval Maidan  to attend the pope's service.

*Eucharistic Congresses have been held periodically since 1881. The first congress was held at Lille, France, on June 21, 1881 by the inspiration of Bishop Gaston de Ségur.
