The Absence of Fatherly Advice

He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, walking in the ways of his father and in his sin, which he had caused Israel to commit. (1 Kings 15:26)

Nadab was just taking his cue from dad, whose actions were sinful and evil. For Nadab, it was all he'd ever known. When Jeroboam died, Nadab assumed his place on the throne and served as king for two years. It probably didn't occur to him to change, or that he needed to make amends. Surely if his dad knew how to avoid God's anger, he would have told him, right?

His father never sat Nadab down and told the boy how to be a better person or king. He didn't leave instructions. All Nadab had was his father's legacy; it would be the guide that led to his downfall.

Lord, Show me how to leave a lasting, Godly legacy. I don't want to grieve You as Jeroboam did. For he provoked You to anger, by the sins he committed, and those he allowed Israel to commit.(1 Kings 15:30) Father, keep me from being blindsided. Reveal areas where I need more of You and less of me. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
