What is Holy communion or Holy Eucharist?
Holy Eucharist is known in various names like Holy Communion,Blessed Sacrament, Lord's Supper, Holy Host etc. It is one of the seven sacraments that a faithful person receives in Churches.
In catholic churches , it is received as the third sacrament among the seven. It occurs only after receiving Baptism and Affirmation.
Any baptised person who is not forbidden by law may and must be admitted to holy communion [Code of Canon Law. 912]. As per Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), during Holy Communion beleivers consume the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the form of bread and wine and participate in his sacrifice. The Eucharist is "the source and summit of the Christian life."
How many times a person can receive Holy communion in a day?
Now Lets check, what Catholic Church says about the permission to receive Holy Communion more than once per day.
Code of Canon Law. 917,921 states the following:
Can. 917. A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of can. 921 (2).
Can. 921 (1). The Christian faithful who are in danger of death from any cause are to be nourished by holy communion in the form of Viaticum.
Can. 921 (2). Even if they have been nourished by holy communion on the same day, however, those in danger of death are strongly urged to receive communion again.
So from the above Codes of Canon Law , it is clear that a faithful person can receive the Holy Eucharist twice a day only during the celebration of the Eucharist in which the person participates, but the beleivers who are in danger of death from any cause are to be nourished by holy communion in the form of Viaticum even if they have been nourished by holy communion on the same day, however, those in danger of death are strongly urged to receive communion again. Code of Canon Law 917, 921
The Holy Communion given as Viaticum may be received at any time.
