First Commandment: Thou Shalt Not Have Any Gods Before Me

The First Commandment reads:

And God spake all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.(Exodus 20:1-3)

The Creator Is The Only True God

Only the Creator has the power to be God; looking to anything, or anyone, else for salvation is literally a dead end. This includes anything that is deemed "more important right now" than worship and obedience to the only true God, or worshipping the true God in a manner contrary to His Word.

Jesus summarises this as

Matthew 22:36-38

"'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment.

“[A Third Time Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection] While Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and said to them on the way, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified; and on the third day he will be raised.”” -Matthew 20: 17-19
